About Robert the Bruce

THE BRUCE TRILOGY

In 1286, when the aged King Alexander III of Scotland died, his only living heir was his granddaughter Margaret, known as the Maid of Norway.

But the little girl, on whose slight shoulders so much depended, had not yet reached Scotland's shores when she fell gravely ill.  The Scottish escort that awaited her in Orkney to take her to Scone to be crowned was never able to complete its mission.  On the 26th of September, 1290, she died.

Dozens put forth their claims to the crown.  In the end, two powerful Scottish families possessed the strongest ties to royal blood: the Bruces and the Balliols.  The late King Alexander had favored Robert Bruce, fourth of that name, also known as Robert the Competitor.  But not everyone was convinced a Bruce should become King of Scotland, including Longshanks.

If a Bruce wished to call himself ‘king’, he would have to fight for the right to do so.

There is an entire untold story beyond William Wallace's rebellion - that of Robert the Bruce and the men who fought with him against Edward I (Longshanks) and Edward II.  All these tales are packed with plenty of historical battle scenes, narrow escapes, betrayal, murder, political intrigue and yes, some romance:

The Crown in the Heather is about Robert the Bruce, who became King of Scotland after William Wallace began the fight against Edward I of England (aka "Longshanks").  A vassal of Longshanks', Robert secretly begins to plot his path to the throne. It takes a murder to put him there.  He is aided by the unlikely brilliance of the soft-spoken young nobleman, James Douglas.

In the second Robert the Bruce story, Worth Dying For, Robert learns that he not only has to rid Scotland of the English, but he must also win over his own countrymen.  Meanwhile, Edward II wars against his own barons to preserve both his grip on power and the life of his dearest friend, Piers de Gaveston.

The final story in the Robert the Bruce trilogy, Carry My Heart, is about Robert the Bruce's final years  and Edward II's tragic decline.  While Robert continues to fight to realize his dream of an independent Scotland, James' loyalty to him is put to the test as he struggles to find meaning in his life beyond the endless battles and raids.
